The Beach Pavilion (today the Aquarium) was built in 1898. It was
conveniently situated close to the Beach Hotel and next to East London's
very first tidal bathing pool. A tramcar is parked at its terminus in front of
the Pavilion. The tramway system was opened in January 1900, its route
following Fleet Street and down Inverleith Terrace. However, the steep hill
past the Beach Hotel proved dangerous, with at least one tramcar careering
out of control onto the rocks to the right of the Pavilion.
